Missoula, Mont. — Drivers traveling along Interstate 90 in southwest Montana are all too familiar with the challenges that winter weather brings, including frequent road closures. Already this month, four accidents along the stretch of I-90 east have led to significant closures, a reminder of the harsh conditions often faced in the region.
According to Walt Houghton, the Maintenance Chief with the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), road closures depend on the nature of the incident. If a severe car accident or a natural disaster occurs, authorities may need to close the interstate. Weather conditions, particularly heavy snow and high winds, also play a significant role in these decisions. Some areas along I-90 east have seen up to 10 inches of snow, with wind gusts reaching speeds of 45 mph.
Houghton explained that two plow drivers are responsible for clearing I-90 east of Bozeman, often covering between 500 to 1,100 miles of roadway in a single day. These drivers must continuously work to clear snow from the road, tackling driving lanes, passing lanes, and the shoulder areas. However, when snow accumulates too quickly, safety concerns can lead to temporary closures.
“Mother nature rules the roost,” Houghton said. “We try to keep the road open as much as we can. Our crews work tirelessly, but sometimes we simply can’t keep up, and the road needs to be closed for safety.”
When road closures occur, Houghton emphasized the importance of patience. Plow crews and local officials work diligently to reopen the highway as soon as possible, but delays are sometimes unavoidable. Drivers are advised to be prepared in the event of a closure, especially when traveling long distances.
Houghton recommends ensuring vehicles are fully fueled, equipped with good tires, and stocked with a roadside hazard kit. Essential items to carry include a blanket, warm clothing, a shovel, food, and water. These supplies are critical for anyone who might find themselves stranded or stuck in traffic due to winter road conditions.
As the winter season continues, travelers on I-90 should remain vigilant, stay informed about weather forecasts, and take steps to be prepared for potential closures that could affect their journey.
