Montana Department of Environmental Quality Offers $1 Million in Grant Funding for Water Quality Projects

MISSOULA, Mont. — The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is now accepting applications for grant funding aimed at supporting water quality projects throughout the state. A total of $1 million will be distributed to nonprofit organizations and government entities for initiatives focused on addressing pollution and advancing practices outlined in locally developed watershed restoration plans.

Organizations interested in applying must submit draft applications by March 7. Successful applicants will receive grants ranging from $10,000 to $300,000, with the funding intended to support efforts that enhance water quality and ecosystem health. The DEQ’s initiative aligns with Montana’s broader environmental goals, targeting areas where significant improvements can be made in water management and pollution reduction.

To ensure long-term project sustainability, each selected project will be required to match 40% of its total cost with non-federal funds. This stipulation encourages community engagement and partnerships, allowing local stakeholders to take an active role in the preservation of Montana’s natural resources.

“This funding is a valuable opportunity for organizations to make a tangible impact on the state’s water quality, while supporting local solutions to environmental challenges,” said a DEQ spokesperson. “The grant is a critical tool in empowering communities to carry out projects that are vital to the health of our watersheds.”

As the application deadline draws closer, organizations are encouraged to carefully review the guidelines and prepare their proposals in advance. The DEQ anticipates that these projects will contribute significantly to improving water quality and ensuring the protection of Montana’s aquatic ecosystems for future generations.
