Missoula, MT – The City of Missoula Police Department has released an update regarding a shooting investigation that took place on July 16, 2025, in the 2000 block of Cooper Street, announcing new developments as the case moves forward.
According to officials, the Missoula County Attorney’s Office filed amended charges on April 16, 2026, against 27-year-old Josef Manchester through the Fourth Judicial District Court. The updated filing includes several additional felony charges, among them attempted deliberate homicide, multiple counts of criminal endangerment, criminal possession of dangerous drugs with intent to distribute, and offenses related to the unlawful possession of property subject to forfeiture. An added felony charge involving the solicitation of prohibited conduct was also included.
Authorities say the expanded charges are the result of continued investigative work led by a task force officer assigned to the Missoula Drug Task Force. Through search warrants, forensic analysis, and a detailed review of digital evidence, investigators identified additional alleged criminal activity beyond the original incident.
During the course of the investigation, officials also uncovered alleged conduct involving the exploitation of an animal. Due to the sensitive nature of the findings, specific details have not been released. However, police stated that the conduct violates Montana law and has been documented and submitted to prosecutors for consideration.
The department emphasized that crimes involving the abuse or exploitation of animals are taken seriously and are a concern for the community.
Officials noted that the charges are allegations at this stage, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. The case remains active as it proceeds through the judicial process, with police continuing to work alongside the Missoula County Attorney’s Office.
