Missoula, MT – The City of Missoula has implemented a temporary leash requirement on the Waterworks Ridge Trail to help protect sensitive native vegetation during the spring season.
Officials said the annual restriction is intended to protect Missoula phlox and other cushion plant communities found along Waterworks Ridge.
The species is described as globally rare and unique to the Missoula Valley, with the largest known population located on the ridge.
City staff are asking trail users to keep dogs on leashes and remain on designated paths to avoid damaging the fragile plant life and surrounding habitat.
The restriction applies specifically to the Ridge Trail, while nearby areas such as Cherry Gulch remain under standard leash and voice control rules.
Officials thanked residents for supporting conservation efforts and helping preserve the area’s unique natural resources on city-managed conservation lands.
