Vehicle Grappler used to safely stop armed suspect in Missoula

Missoula, MT – The Missoula Police Department used a vehicle Grappler to safely stop a suspect during a high-risk incident on March 19.

Officials said the individual was armed and wanted on a $250,000 warrant out of Ravalli County.

The suspect vehicle was heading toward the downtown area during peak business hours when an officer deployed the Grappler, bringing the vehicle to a controlled stop on the Beartracks Bridge. No injuries were reported.

The operation was conducted in coordination with the FBI Montana Regional Violent Crime Task Force, which includes multiple law enforcement agencies across the state.

Authorities said the Grappler system allows officers to safely immobilize fleeing vehicles, reducing the need for high-speed pursuits and lowering risks to the public and officers.

The department has equipped supervisor vehicles with the technology as part of its efforts to improve safety and use non-lethal tools in high-risk situations.
