Rescue Operation Saves Three Snowmobilers Near West Yellowstone

WEST YELLOWSTONE, Mont. — Three snowmobilers were rescued late Wednesday night after becoming stuck 11 miles north of West Yellowstone near Tepee Creek.

At approximately 11:31 p.m. on January 22, the West Yellowstone Police Department Dispatch received a call from one of the stranded snowmobilers, who reported that the group had become stuck and abandoned their snowmobiles. The snowmobilers requested immediate assistance, prompting a swift response from local authorities.

The Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office, along with the West Yellowstone Search and Rescue (GCSSAR) team and Hebgen Basin Rural Fire District, quickly mobilized to locate the stranded group. After assessing the situation, responders determined the best course of action was to reach the snowmobilers using snowmobiles themselves, given the remote location and snowy terrain.

The search team was able to locate the group not far from the main Big Sky Trail. Once found, the snowmobilers were safely transported to a parking lot north of West Yellowstone, where their vehicles were parked.

Gallatin County Sheriff Dan Springer took the opportunity to remind the public of the challenges posed by the vast and rugged terrain in Gallatin County. He stressed the importance of snowmobilers having reliable communication devices and a contingency plan in place, particularly when traveling after dark in cold temperatures. Sheriff Springer noted that winter conditions in the area can quickly turn hazardous, making preparedness critical.

This rescue serves as a timely reminder of the potential risks faced by winter adventurers, especially when venturing into backcountry areas after dark. The Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office encourages snowmobilers and outdoor enthusiasts to always plan ahead and be equipped for unforeseen circumstances.
