Missoula, MT – A man wanted for threatening to use explosives was shot and killed by Montana Highway Patrol troopers Thursday afternoon after he fled from a traffic stop attempt near Big Timber, authorities said.
The incident began at approximately 2:48 p.m. when a highway patrol trooper observed a vehicle matching the description of the suspect’s car near Big Timber. The officer initiated a traffic stop, prompting the suspect to flee. A second trooper was called in for backup as the pursuit continued, according to a news release from the Montana Highway Patrol.
The man, whose identity has not been released, was wanted in Nebraska for charges related to threats of using explosives or placing bombs. Authorities stated that he was considered armed, dangerous, and suicidal.
In an effort to stop the fleeing vehicle, the first trooper attempted a PIT (Precision Immobilization Technique) maneuver. However, the maneuver was unsuccessful, and the suspect continued to flee. As the situation escalated, the man reportedly fired at the troopers, who returned fire in self-defense.
The exchange of gunfire lasted only a few minutes, with the troopers confirming that the suspect was down shortly after the shots were fired. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Fortunately, neither of the troopers was injured in the incident. Both officers have been placed on administrative leave, in accordance with department policy, while the Montana Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) has taken over the investigation.
The Sweet Grass County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.
Authorities continue to gather details about the incident, which unfolded in just a matter of minutes. The shooting highlights the risks law enforcement officers face when dealing with suspects armed with dangerous weapons and fleeing from police.
As of now, the DCI has not released further details regarding the circumstances leading up to the gunfire, and an investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
