Historic Graves Hotel Destroyed by Fire, Leaving Harlowton Community Heartbroken

HARLOWTON, Mont. — A devastating fire swept through the historic Graves Hotel in Harlowton on February 12, 2023, reducing the 115-year-old landmark to ashes in a matter of minutes. The loss has deeply affected the small rural community, underscoring the vital role such places play in the social fabric of Montana’s towns.

Once a bustling hub of activity, the Graves Hotel was more than just a building; it was a repository of local history and memories. Residents say nearly every family in Harlowton has ties to the hotel — whether through work, gatherings, or stories passed down through generations.

Jeff Eagleton, a local community member, described the day of the fire as “the saddest day ever.” Upon hearing the news, Eagleton drove 30 miles at over 100 miles per hour to witness the devastation firsthand. “I stood in the street and cried with the rest of the community,” he said.

The destruction of the Graves Hotel comes at a time when rural Montana communities are already facing significant challenges. Once, as much as 70 percent of the food consumed in the state was locally grown, but today that number has dropped to just 3 percent, reflecting broader changes in the region’s economy and way of life.

In towns like Harlowton, relationships and neighborly support remain the lifeblood of the community. The loss of a historic landmark such as the Graves Hotel serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of preserving local heritage amid these ongoing shifts.

As Harlowton begins the process of healing and rebuilding, residents are reminded of the strength that comes from community and the stories that bind them together.
