Three Cats Perish in Early Morning House Fire Near Missoula

MISSOULA, Mont. — Three house cats died Tuesday morning in a fire that broke out at a residence northwest of Missoula.

The Missoula Rural Fire District (MRFD) responded to the home along Big Flat Road shortly before 8:30 a.m. after reports of smoke visible from the windows and doors.

Upon arrival, firefighters observed smoke coming from the eaves of the mobile home. Crews conducted a thorough search of the residence following initial reports that a person might still be inside; however, no occupants were found.

The fire was located in the kitchen area and was quickly contained by responding crews. While no human injuries were reported, three cats were found deceased inside the home.

Fire investigators are currently working to determine the cause of the blaze. Damage to the property is estimated at approximately $40,000.

A total of 15 firefighters responded to the incident, supported by two engines, four water tenders, a ladder truck, and two command units. The Frenchtown Rural Fire District provided mutual aid. Additional agencies on scene included the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office, Missoula Electric Cooperative, and the American Red Cross.
