Sunday shooting injured 16-year-old boy; police believe shooting happened near water tower

Ashooting early Sunday along the Rimrocks in Billings injured a 16-year-old boy and police believe the shooting happened near the “lollipop” water tower.

Billings police had previously described the victim as a juvenile. He was initially said to have non-life threatening injuries.

Tuesday afternoon Billings Police Department Lt. Brandon Wooley shared some additional information about the incident, which he said remains under investigation by the department’s detectives division.

BPD officers had been in the area, around the 1400 block of Rimrock Road, which runs south of the Rims, when they heard gunfire, according to Wooley.

That was at about 3 a.m. A few minutes later, police learned that a male had been dropped off at a hospital with a gunshot wound. It was after further investigation that police came to believe the shooting happened on the Rims near the water tower. The circumstances surrounding the shooting also remain under investigation, according to Wooley.
BPD Sgt. Garrett Peterson said in a social media update Sunday that the shooting victim was taken to the hospital in a personal vehicle. The sergeant had stated that there was no danger to the public at the time, and that police were continuing to investigate.

The 16-year-old injured in Sunday’s shooting is at least the second teenager injured this year in a shooting in the vicinity of the water tower located off Highway 3 west of the Billings Logan International Airport.

On Jan. 21, 19-year-old Kane Streitz was shot and fatally injured. He was hospitalized and died four days later. His family has said they believe his shooting was accidental, and Billings police have so far announced no arrests related to the homicide investigation they opened after the shooting.
