Polson Police Officer Fired Upon During Traffic Stop, Suspect Arrested

POLSON, MT – A traffic stop on U.S. Highway 93 turned violent late on February 14, 2025, when Polson Police Officer Michael Wharton was shot at while attempting to pull over a speeding vehicle. The suspect, 49-year-old Cameron Francis from Gridley, California, was arrested without incident later that night in the Elmo area and is now facing an attempted deliberate homicide charge.

The incident began at approximately 11:51 PM when Officer Wharton attempted to stop a vehicle with no visible taillights near The Shoe restaurant in Polson. Initially, the vehicle slowed down as if complying with the officer’s attempt to pull it over. However, without warning, the driver opened fire on Officer Wharton’s patrol car, striking it multiple times and causing significant damage to the vehicle.

Despite the damage to his patrol car, Officer Wharton continued to pursue the suspect. The pursuit, however, was cut short when the officer was forced to abandon it due to the vehicle’s compromised condition. Wharton sustained minor injuries from shattered glass but is expected to make a full recovery.

The swift actions of additional law enforcement agencies played a crucial role in the apprehension of the suspect. Officers from the Flathead Tribal Police Department and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office joined in the pursuit and subsequent arrest.

“The swift and coordinated response of our officers and partner agencies was instrumental in ensuring the suspect was taken into custody without further harm to the public,” said Polson Police Chief George Simpson. “This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers our officers face daily. We are extremely grateful that Officer Wharton was not seriously injured and commend his bravery and perseverance.”

Cameron Francis was apprehended in the Elmo area and transported to the Lake County Detention Center. He made his initial appearance in Lake County court on February 17, 2025. He is currently being held on a $2 million bond.

This frightening encounter highlights the risks law enforcement officers face while carrying out their duties. As the investigation continues, authorities remain grateful for Officer Wharton’s resilience and the collaborative efforts of the agencies involved in bringing the suspect into custody.
