Montana Department of Transportation Proposes Removal of Historic Old Toston Bridge

Missoula, MT – The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) has announced a proposal to remove the Old Toston Bridge, a historic steel truss structure that has spanned the Missouri River since 1920. The bridge, located on the Highway 287 bypass, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005 and is recognized as a significant piece of local history.

MDT’s proposed project includes the removal of the bridge’s deck, superstructure, and the piers situated in the Missouri River. The agency cites safety concerns and the ongoing deterioration of the bridge as the driving factors behind the decision. Since 2022, the bridge has been closed to the public after rising water levels prompted a precautionary closure. Despite the original concerns, the bridge has remained inaccessible to traffic ever since.

The Old Toston Bridge, measuring 525 feet in length, has remained largely unchanged since its completion over a century ago, except for occasional replacements to the timber deck. However, following historic flooding in Montana in June 2022, which led to severe damage to other bridges, such as the Carbella Bridge near Gardiner, there has been increasing concern over the structural integrity of the Old Toston Bridge.

For years, residents of Toston and the surrounding area have voiced their concerns about the future of the bridge. Many locals view the structure as an iconic symbol of their community and have expressed apprehension about its potential removal. In response, MDT has opened a public comment period to gather feedback on the proposed project, allowing citizens the opportunity to voice their opinions.

Those wishing to submit comments can do so either online or in writing to MDT’s Butte office at PO Box 3068, Butte, MT 59702-3068. Comments should reference project UPN 10557000. Additionally, the public is encouraged to contact Butte District Preconstruction Engineer Brandon Jones with any questions or concerns regarding the project.

The public comment period provides an important opportunity for local residents and stakeholders to influence the future of the Old Toston Bridge, which has long been a beloved landmark in the community. The MDT is encouraging as many people as possible to share their views on the proposed plan.
