MISSOULA, MT — Authorities have identified the woman who tragically drowned in the Bitterroot River near Maclay Bridge during the Memorial Day weekend.
Vanessa Madel, 41, a resident of Missoula, died Saturday, May 24, after entering the river. According to Missoula County Sheriff Jeremiah Petersen, Madel was swimming when she apparently became fatigued while crossing the river and was swept downstream by the strong current.
Missoula Rural Fire District Battalion Chief Ron Lubke told MTN that emergency responders were called to the scene after Madel was reported missing. Despite rescue efforts, she was unable to be saved.
The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by river currents, especially during the busy holiday weekend when many residents and visitors seek relief in local waterways.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the drowning. No further details have been released at this time.
