Tragic Family Dispute Leads to Double Deaths in Lewis & Clark County

LEWIS & CLARK COUNTY, MT — A devastating incident unfolded in Lewis & Clark County on the evening of May 1, 2025, when two brothers were found dead at their home following an apparent family dispute that turned deadly. The victims, identified as 61-year-old Scott Marvin Steinbach and 64-year-old Ty William Steinbach, were discovered in a residence located north of Highway 200 near L&C Road at approximately 6:50 p.m.

According to Lewis & Clark County Sheriff/Coroner Leo Dutton, deputies responding to the scene initially found one deceased individual inside the home, along with signs of an internal fire. As the investigation unfolded, a second deceased individual, later identified as Ty Steinbach, was found.

Sheriff Dutton confirmed that Ty Steinbach had died from gunshot wounds and that his death was ruled a homicide. Authorities believe that Scott Steinbach, his brother, is responsible for Ty’s death. Dutton suggested that the tragic events may have stemmed from a long-standing family feud that escalated into violence.

“It appears to be a family dispute that turned deadly,” Dutton said in a statement to MTN News.

The investigation revealed that after fatally shooting his brother, Scott Steinbach poured gasoline on his body and set the house on fire
