Second Measles Case Confirmed in Flathead County; Logan Health Mobilizes Response Team

Missoula, MT — A second case of measles has been confirmed in Flathead County, health officials reported last week. The latest case involves a local resident who recently traveled outside Montana.

In response to the emerging situation, Logan Health in Kalispell established a Measles Incident Command Team in March. The team, comprised of dozens of healthcare professionals, has been meeting weekly to prepare for a potential measles outbreak in the region.

Dr. Cory Short, Chief Medical Officer at Logan Health, explained that while measles is a rare disease in the area, the hospital is taking proactive steps to educate both patients and healthcare workers about its risks and symptoms.

“Measles is something most of us have just read about in textbooks; we haven’t seen too many cases of it fortunately,” Dr. Short said.

Drawing from lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Measles Incident Command Team is studying data from other states and evaluating how patients might present with measles symptoms. This preparation aims to ensure a swift and effective response should the virus spread locally.

Measles, a highly contagious virus, can cause serious illness, particularly among vulnerable groups such as immunocompromised individuals, young children, and pregnant women, Dr. Short noted.

Vaccination remains the most effective defense against the disease. According to Dr. Short, a two-dose measles vaccination regimen is approximately 97% effective in preventing illness, while a single dose offers about 93% protection against infection and transmission.

For adults uncertain of their vaccination status, Logan Health offers blood testing to determine immunity. Those lacking sufficient antibodies against measles are typically eligible to receive the vaccine.

With vigilance and vaccination efforts underway, Logan Health aims to minimize the risk of a larger outbreak and protect the community’s most vulnerable residents.
