Lakeside, MT — A proposed groundwater control system in Flathead County is sparking considerable public interest, leading to a scheduled public hearing to discuss the matter in detail. The Lakeside County Water and Sewer District has requested a permit to expand the existing wastewater system, which is nearing capacity.
The proposed expansion aims to upgrade the current treatment facility to accommodate an increased volume of wastewater. The updated system would treat and process wastewater before discharging it into state groundwater via rapid infiltration basins. This change would require a permit from the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ).
As the project moves forward, the DEQ has already received more than 200 public comments regarding the proposal, highlighting the significant concern or interest within the community. In response to this public feedback, the comment period was extended, providing residents more time to share their views.
The public hearing is scheduled for Thursday, February 27, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Lakeside Quick Response Unit Community Room. The session will allow local residents to learn more about the proposal, ask questions, and voice their opinions directly to DEQ representatives and other stakeholders involved in the project.
The new facility is proposed to be located on Wiley Dike Road. DEQ officials assure that treated wastewater discharged into the groundwater will be subject to strict permit limitations and conditions, intended to protect both public health and the environment.
As the community remains actively engaged in the decision-making process, the upcoming hearing will provide crucial insights into the future of wastewater management in the region.
