Missoula’s Turkey Day Races Expecting Record Turnout

Missoula, MT– The annual Turkey Day 8k & 3k Family Fun Run is set to draw around 3,000 participants this year, marking a significant increase in attendance over last year’s event. Organized by Run Wild Missoula, the race has become a beloved tradition for the community, offering both an opportunity for exercise and a chance to gather with friends and family on Thanksgiving Day.

Trisha Drobeck, Executive Director of Run Wild Missoula, shared her thoughts on the growing participation. “It’s been a long fall with the election and everything else, and I think it’s just a reflection of people wanting to get back out there and connect,” she said. “We’re three years past COVID, and I think people are just ready to make those connections again.”

The event, which begins and ends on the University of Montana’s campus, includes the 8k race as well as a more relaxed 3k Fun Run designed for families. Police officers will be on hand to direct traffic along the course, while 50-60 volunteers will assist with various event needs.

A key aspect of the Turkey Day Races is its charitable component. All registration fees go to the Missoula Food Bank, with the goal of surpassing the $10,000 raised last year. “It’s wonderful to see the community come together, not just for a race but for a good cause,” Drobeck added.

In addition to the races, the event will feature two Indigenous singers who will perform during the run. Drobeck emphasized the importance of acknowledging that the event takes place on Indigenous lands, helping to raise awareness and celebrate local heritage.

As the race approaches, excitement is building in Missoula, with thousands of participants expected to join in the holiday tradition. Whether running for fun, fitness, or charity, the Turkey Day Races are a reminder of the power of community and connection.
