Missoula, MT — The Missoula Montana Airport is preparing for the completion of phase two of its terminal expansion, set to debut on May 15, 2025. This next phase follows the opening of a new terminal three years ago, and it is expected to enhance the travel experience for passengers. Among the most significant improvements in this phase are the addition of two new baggage carousels, which are designed to streamline baggage handling and reduce wait times for travelers.
Tim Damrow, the airport’s deputy director, emphasized that these upgrades are part of a larger plan to modernize and expand the airport’s facilities. “The big things in phase two are going to be our two baggage carousels,” Damrow said. “We’re excited to improve the passenger experience.”
However, the airport’s efforts are far from over. Once the terminal expansion is complete, attention will turn to an even more critical project: the renovation of the airport’s primary runway, Runway 1230. The runway is scheduled to close for construction from September 2 to September 7, 2025. During this time, all flights will be grounded as crews work to complete necessary upgrades to the runway, which has been in operation for nearly two decades.
The runway renovation is a key project in maintaining the airport’s long-term viability, according to Damrow. “Everything on the airport has a different life cycle, and typically we see about 20 years before major improvements are needed,” he explained.
The bid for the renovation was awarded to Schellinger Construction, a firm based in Columbia Falls, Montana, with a contract valued at approximately $18 million. During the five-day closure, no flights will be able to take off or land at the airport, meaning that travelers will need to plan accordingly for any trips during this period.
Despite the temporary disruption, airport officials are confident that the upgraded runway will improve safety and efficiency in the long run. “We’re really looking forward to seeing the runway completed and watching passengers enjoy both the new facilities and the revamped runway,” Damrow added.
For those planning to travel in September, it’s important to note that online booking systems will reflect the runway closure dates, allowing passengers to make alternate travel arrangements if necessary.
With phase two of the terminal expansion on track and runway renovations underway, Missoula Montana Airport is well-positioned to handle the growing demands of air travel while continuing to offer an enhanced experience for passengers.
