Missoula Man Killed in Hit-and-Run Crash on Brooks Street

Missoula, MT – Authorities have identified the victim of a fatal pedestrian accident that occurred on Brooks Street in Missoula late Tuesday night. Robert D. Matoon, 53, of Missoula, was struck by a semi-truck while crossing the street in a marked crosswalk at approximately 10:30 p.m. on December 10.

The Missoula Police Department (MPD) responded to the scene at the intersection of Brooks Street and South Higgins Avenue, where they found that Matoon had been hit by a semi-truck without a trailer. The truck did not stop after the collision, continuing south on Brooks Street. Police later located the vehicle and detained the 38-year-old male driver. He was subsequently released, pending the results of the ongoing investigation.

Missoula County Sheriff Jeremiah Petersen confirmed the identity of the victim, and MPD is now asking for the public’s assistance. Investigators are urging anyone with information about the incident or the driver to come forward and contact the Missoula Police Department at 406-552-6300.

At this time, it remains unclear whether the driver was aware of the collision. Investigators are working to piece together the circumstances of the crash, including whether any factors such as weather, speed, or distraction may have contributed to the tragedy.

The semi-truck involved in the incident was reportedly not towing a trailer, and the driver’s identity has not been released. No further details have been provided about the driver’s involvement or whether charges will be filed.

Authorities continue to urge witnesses or anyone with information to contact the police, as they seek answers and closure for the family of Robert Matoon, who was fatally injured while crossing a busy intersection in Missoula.

The incident marks another tragic loss of life on Missoula’s roadways and serves as a reminder for both drivers and pedestrians to remain vigilant, especially in heavily trafficked areas.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the Missoula Police Department at 406-552-6300.
