Missoula, MT – The Missoula Fire Department has announced the appointment of John Petroff as its new Assistant Chief of Administration, a role that comes with nearly two decades of experience in fire service and leadership. A native of Montana, Petroff’s extensive background in both operational and wellness-focused divisions positions him as an ideal addition to the department’s leadership team.
Petroff’s fire service career began with Miles City Fire and Rescue before he joined the Missoula Fire Department in 2007. Over the course of 14 years, he served in the department’s Operations Division, responding to emergency calls and gaining invaluable hands-on experience. His deep operational knowledge has been pivotal in supporting the department’s mission of saving lives, protecting property, and easing suffering.
In 2021, Petroff took on a leadership role as Head of the Health and Wellness Division. There, he worked to improve the well-being of the department’s personnel, overseeing the Mobile Support Team (MST), Peer Support Team, and Peer Fitness Team. His dedication to the health and fitness of firefighters, especially in high-stress environments, made him a trusted figure within the department.
As Assistant Chief of Administration, Petroff is set to continue supporting both the department’s operational needs and its dedicated staff. His goal in the new position is clear: “To support the Firefighters, Mobile Support Team, and the entire Missoula Fire Department staff behind the scenes, so they can carry out our mission,” he said. “Save lives, protect property, ease pain and suffering.”
Chief Gordy Hughes expressed strong confidence in Petroff’s ability to lead. “John’s longstanding dedication to the well-being of our firefighters and his deep operational knowledge make him an outstanding addition to our leadership team. We’re thrilled to have him help guide the department forward.”
With his extensive background, leadership in firefighter wellness, and deep commitment to the department’s values, Petroff is poised to make a lasting impact in his new role as Assistant Chief of Administration.
