Polson, MT — Four individuals were rescued Sunday afternoon from Wild Horse Island on Flathead Lake after being stranded due to adverse weather conditions. The group, which had paddled a canoe and kayak to the island, found themselves unable to return to the mainland because of strong winds and rough waves.
Lake County Search and Rescue received a call for help and swiftly deployed a team to locate the stranded boaters. Three crew members made their way to the island, where they found the group wet and cold, but otherwise in stable condition.
The rescue team successfully brought the individuals back to safety, and they were reported to be unharmed, though shaken by the experience. Authorities stated that the group was fortunate, as the weather conditions could have escalated quickly, posing a greater risk to their safety.
Wild Horse Island, located in the heart of Flathead Lake, is known for its rugged terrain and limited access, making rescue operations more challenging. Despite the difficult conditions, Lake County Search and Rescue’s quick response and expertise ensured a successful outcome for the stranded individuals.
The rescue serves as a reminder for outdoor enthusiasts to always check weather forecasts and be prepared for changing conditions when venturing into remote areas, especially during the unpredictable spring weather in Montana.
