Detention Officer Attacked at Lewis and Clark County Detention Center, Returns to Work Quickly

HELENA, MT — A detention officer at the Lewis and Clark County Detention Center was injured in an attack on Friday, May 2, but has since returned to work, expressing gratitude for his quick recovery.

According to Lewis and Clark County Sheriff Leo Dutton, the officer was serving dinner to inmates when he was assaulted by inmate Conrad Olsway. Olsway, who was being held on several charges, including criminal mischief, assault on a peace officer, and bond revocation, allegedly leaped from his bunk and attacked the officer with a toothbrush that had been sharpened into a makeshift weapon. The inmate is also accused of punching the officer during the altercation.

A second detention officer was able to assist in subduing Olsway and prevent further injury. The officer who was attacked was quickly transported to St. Peter’s emergency room, where he received treatment for a stab wound to his face.

Despite the severity of the situation, the injured officer was able to return to his duties shortly thereafter, downplaying the injury as “just a scratch.” His quick return to work has been seen as a testament to his professionalism and resilience.

Sheriff Dutton acknowledged the dangerous nature of the job, especially during National Correctional Officer Week. “As I pause and reflect about how thankful I am that there are people who dedicate themselves to this profession, I also realize there is a dangerous element,” he said in a statement to MTN News. “The individuals who work in the detention center are professional, and dedicated to the safety and security of inmates, and to those who live in our community.”

At the time of the incident, Olsway was being held at the facility on various charges. Authorities continue to investigate the attack, though no additional charges have been announced against the inmate at this time.

The event has brought attention to the risks that correctional officers face daily, often in difficult and dangerous conditions. The Lewis and Clark County Detention Center is continuing to take steps to ensure the safety and well-being of its staff and inmates.

This incident serves as a reminder of the vital role that correctional officers play in maintaining order and safety in correctional facilities, despite the often-overlooked risks they face on the job.
