Banana Lake Fire Near Plains Grows to 929 Acres, 15% Contained

MISSOULA, MT — The Banana Lake Fire, burning north of Plains, has expanded slightly to 929 acres but remains 15% contained as of Wednesday, June 4, 2025.

Over 200 firefighters are actively engaged in battling the blaze, supported by 14 engines, two helicopters, and 10 tenders. Fire crews are utilizing drones to identify and monitor remaining hot spots to improve containment efforts.

No evacuations or area closures have been issued at this time. However, authorities have reduced the speed limit along sections of Highway 28 due to ongoing fire activity in the region.

The fire was first reported on Saturday, May 31, at approximately 4:25 p.m. It originated between Locust Hill and Highway 28, about four miles north of Plains. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Officials continue to monitor the situation closely as crews work to increase containment and protect the surrounding communities.
