Equipment operator asks motorists to provide space for sand trucks and snowplows to operate

Billings, Montana – A City of Billings equipment operator requested that motorists give snowplows and sand trucks room to operate.

Jake Barnhart, an equipment operator for the City of Billings, said they are currently sanding busy intersections and school zones.

He claimed that sand and salt are combined. Usually, they sand the same spots repeatedly:

“The more cars that drive over this mixture, it just blows it off to the side of the road,” Barnhart said. “So, we need to go re-hit it so when people do come their tires are actually getting some sand on it and a little traction for them.”

By providing the trucks and plows room to maneuver, drivers can assist, according to Barnhart.

“If you see us out there, give us a little space,” Barnhart said. “Give us some time. I know everybody is in a rush to get everywhere. But, give us a little space. We’re going to make it a safer and easier commute for you.”

He advised people to phone the municipal and ask for some sand if they see an area that is particularly slick. The greatest phone number, according to him, is (406) 657-8250.
