Missoula, MT — The Missoula County Clerk and Treasurer’s Office will temporarily halt processing vehicle transactions from March 13 through March 16 as part of a major system upgrade. The closure, which will also impact all Montana Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) stations, is in preparation for the launch of a new vehicle registration and credentialing system on March 17.
The new system, known as CARS (Credentialing and Registration System), is designed to offer enhanced online services, faster turnaround times, and more electronic payment options for vehicle-related transactions. Missoula County Clerk and Treasurer Tyler Gernant expressed excitement about the improvements the new system will bring.
“Although we recognize the inconvenience this closure will cause to our community, we are excited for the increased efficiency of the new CARS program,” Gernant said in a statement. “We know this system will ultimately help our customers have a better experience when visiting our office or accessing our services online. A lot of work has gone into the new system, and we are thrilled to finally be able to put it to work for residents.”
During the closure, the Clerk and Treasurer’s Office will still offer essential services such as tax payments, issuance of birth and death certificates, and recording services. However, vehicle-related transactions, including registration and title services, will not be processed.
The CARS system upgrade is the final phase of a multi-year project spearheaded by the Montana Motor Vehicle Division aimed at modernizing and improving customer service and operational efficiency across the state.
While the temporary closure may cause some inconvenience to residents, county officials are optimistic that the long-term benefits of the new system will significantly enhance the efficiency of vehicle transactions and online services.
